I got an email today asking me to list the pros and cons of living in Detroit. My response was something like my “Haters” post in bullet points. I am sure you can all guess the cons. There are concerns with safety, schools, bankruptcy, etc. But let’s take a minute to focus on the pros.
There is so much I love about Detroit (culture, sports, strong sense of community, diversity, beautiful historic homes…etc.) But the thing I love the most is that there is never a dull moment. There is always something going on. I made this point by naming just a few of the things I have missed out on since Hudson was born.
In the last seven weeks I have wanted to attend the Jazz Festival, Shimmer on the River, Tour DeTroit, the opening of Grand Circus, Eastern Market After Dark, TedX, DIFFA: Dining by Design and two ALDS games.
Ryan says this rant makes me sound like a Debbie Downer (and a yuppy.) Definitely not my intent (especially the yuppy part.) I wouldn’t trade the time I’ve had at home with Hudson for anything. I just think it proves a point; Detroit is a city that is alive and vibrant.
To my friend who sent the email, hope this helps. And just to let you know, the pros absolutely outweigh the cons.

Hello Callie. Thank you for your fair opinion about Detroit. We are moving to Detroit in June-July together with my husband and 4-month old son. Would much appreciate your advise on what will be the most comfortable (in terms of walking every day with my child and a stroller) green district/ area to live? May be some park around… Also would be great if this place is close to my husband’s office which is on Woodward Ave (Cadillac Center People Mover Station). Thank you!
Olya, welcome to Detroit!!! Have you looked at Lafayette Park? There are so many families in that area and it is incredibly close to downtown. You also have easy access to the Dequindre Cut which can take you to the Riverfront or Eastern Market. As far as walkability goes, this is the place to be. Good luck! Callie
