Apparently Whole Foods likes to keep a low profile (insert eye roll here.)
Sarcasm aside, I LOVE WHOLE FOODS! I’m not ashamed. They have been open for less than a month and I have been there more times than I can count. All you people who argue to shop local I have a few points I would like to make:
1.) WF Detroit carries more “local” products than any other Detroit grocer I have used. So by shopping at this chain, I am able to support small business owners like Avalon, Germack, McClure’s and more.
and…
2.) The majority of my grocery shopping was split between Eastern Market and Trader Joe’s in Grosse Pointe. Since WF has a partnership with Eastern Market, the only business suffering from my jumping ship is Trader Joe’s. And for that, my dear Joe, I send my most sincere condolences.
After avoiding the initial opening (wasn’t willing to loop around for 10 minutes to find a parking spot) I was finally introduced to Whole Foods Detroit. The moment was everything I wanted it to be. There was a smoothie counter greeting me at the door. They had organic produce up the whazoo. There were root vegetable I would have to google to know what to do with. They carried Amy’s tom kha phak soup (if you haven’t had this yet, you seriously need to run to the store now.) And….and…and…they had a baby section full of all of my favorite newborn and toddler items.
The Indian Village Market is still a household favorite for last minute milk, eggs and beer. Ye Olde Butcher Shoppe hasn’t seen the last of me either. They have a much better selection of wine and beer. They also carry white chicken chili that is the absolute best comfort food.
As you can tell, I am thrilled to have a Whole Foods in Detroit. Then again, I am a fancy pants who has no problem paying a little more for quality food. Now if you will excuse me, I am off to make some tom kha phak soup. When cravings call, they must be answered.
With love from Detroit,
Callie
