Last week I joined the Women’s Garden Club on a trip to Eastern Market. For anyone, who knows my skills as a gardener, you already see the humor in this post. The important thing is, I am working on it.
The new president of the club is looking to recruit young women from the neighborhood. Seeing as she has always been so wonderful to me, how could I turn her down?
The tour Monday evening started at the Detroit Market Garden. Here we were given a history of the site and learned a bit about their plans for the future. Located on the northern side of Eastern Market, just west of the Dequindre Cut, it was amazing to see the gardens and greenhouses with the city skyline and old warehouses as the their backdrop. Urban farming at it’s finest.
Next we had appetizers and cocktails (lemonade for me) at Shed 1. The owner of the space, David, is a former Villager and a great friend of the city. Hearing more about what he does to give back to the community made me want to stop there for all my outdoor needs. I had plans to go back the next day and buy up and entire shipment pots, but a busy week kept me away. Next time you are at the market, be sure to say “hello” and if my pots are still there, pick them up and delivery them for me. Thanks. 🙂
The third stop was for food. Roma Cafe is the oldest Italian restaurant in Detroit and they know how to treat a hungry lady like myself. Garlic bread, pasta, cannolis, Oh My!
The service here always makes me happy. They will not coddle you through the menu. Â The waiters are professionals. Gentleman who have worked in the business for years. They offer delicious food and fast service but perhaps not the most eager to smile and small talk. I love it.
Thank you to Sue, the new club president, for the invitation. It is always nice to meet new neighbors and experience new parts of the city.
