Some people remember sneaking into Grandma’s cookie jar. My grandma never had a cookie jar. Instead, I remember trying to sneak into her tortilla drawer.
There always seemed to be a warm, never-ending supply wrapped in a dishtowel and hidden in the middle drawer next to the stove. If she ever ran out, Grandma let me help her make more.
For years, we have tried to perfect Grandma’s recipe. The problem being there has never been a recipe. Grandma makes them from memory. A handful of this, a pinch of that. The result is fluffy, delicious and wonderfully nostalgic.
It has been nearly a decade since my last attempt at homemade tortillas. Then, suddenly, it hit me. GOOGLE!!! I pulled up a recipe and went to work.

The result was not horrible but it also was not a great success. We used them for fish tacos and quesadillas that night. The next morning, however, they were frisbees. Frisbees that crumbled into millions of pieces as soon as you touched them. FAIL.
That’s it. Grandma, please come over. I will do all the mixing, rolling and heavy lifting. All I need for you to do is put all the ingredients in the bowl and boss me around. Laura, you can come too. These tortillas will come in handy for your Disney themed dinners (‘Sofia the First’, ‘Puss and Boots’?)
With love from Detroit,
Callie

She had a cookie jar, it always had those cookies with jelly in the middle. Those cookies couldn’t hold a candle to her tortillas though. Did you use lard?
Photo looks good.
No! I think that was my biggest mistake. I used a recipe that called for crisco instead. After reading about it, I found out lard is actually better for you. Who would have known?
Huh, it’s better for you and it tastes way better!? I would have never thought so. Well, I should be back in May for a bit, I’ll be glad to be your guinea pig as to authenticity. Good luck Cal!
