Our morning routine often involves a stop for “mommy’s coffee.” This morning, we were running on a tight schedule so the Tim Horton’s drive-thru was our go to. Jack knows each of mommy’s cafe stops. If we go to Avalon, he asks for a cookie. If we are at Germack, he asks for a muffin (which actually comes from Avalon) and if we are at Timmy Ho’s he want’s a “boo berry bagel.”
After a big breakfast, I was surprised he still wanted anything more to eat, but ordered his morning treat anyway. After one torn off bite, Jack said, “No tank you mama. All done.” What was I to do with the leftover? I didn’t want it. What a waste I thought.
Then I pulled up to the on ramp to 75 North, off of Lafayette. There is always a person there asking for food or change. Perfect. I rolled down my window and the gentleman thanked me for the warm toasted bagel.
As soon as Jack realized what was going on he yelled, “MY BAGEL!” Hmmm. How do I explain this to a two year old.
Me: “Jack, you were all done with your bagel. That man does not have food. He is hungry. You had food. Now we have to share.”
Insert silent pause here…
Jack: “Here you go Man. Here you go Jack’s bagel. Man hungry. Man no food.”
Wow. I was truly blown away. In his own two year old way, he actually understood what had happened. Every now and then you get the chance to feel like a truly awesome parent. This was my moment. So happy to help raise a sweet and compassionate little man.
With love from Detroit,
Callie
