Detroit enthusiast Kid Rock teamed up with the community funded Detroit Symphony Orchestra to raise one million dollars through one amazing concert at the Fox Theatre.
The invitation said “VIP chic.” Apparently the dress code was chosen by Kid himself. What in the world does “VIP chic” even mean. I ended up wearing a dress that I bought on sale at Madewell, with a great pair of sued lavender pumps. Ryan wore his tuxedo.
As soon as we walked in the door, we saw everything from evening gowns to ripped jeans. There was one man wearing a cowboy hat and an American flag shirt. Some women wore conservative dresses and pearls while others opted for tube tops and belly shirts. Feeling overdressed, Ryan took his tie off immediately.
As Kid Rock entered the stage and the DSO began to play, I had to laugh. In fact, I couldn’t stop laughing. While the performances were phenomenal, my favorite part was seeing all the different people in one room. Two women to my right were even kicked out for their rowdy behavior. When was the last time people were kicked out of a DSO concert?
Regardless of who you were there to see, there was no mistaking the talent that was on stage. We had a ridiculously good time at both the concert and later at The Fillmore Detroit After Party.

One of the things that sold me on Detroit was the mix of people who come out to support events and businesses committed to Detroit’s future. So often people Balkanize themselves in all aspects of their lives; and that’s so tragic!
Karen, I completely agree. We wanted our son raised around diversity in every way. This city has a special way of bringing everyone together. I laughed because it made me so happy to see such a dichotomy within one little theatre (also because EVERY emotion I have elicits a giggle). It made for a great evening.
