Pick up the latest issue of dbusiness, turn to page 89 and enjoy the piece titled “My Detroit Opportunity.” Ryan is on a roll this week and I could not be more proud.
In this piece he talks about the advantages associated with working and living in Detroit versus other big cities. Don’t get me wrong, we LOVED our time in NYC. But I never saw my husband. Ryan worked from 9am to 3am almost daily for what we refer to as the “dark days.”
Seeing as I tend to exaggerate, no one believed me when I told them his hours. Then they would come to visit for an entire weekend and only see Ryan for short dinner breaks or first thing in the morning. He worked incredibly hard but was never anything more than a minion in the NYC rat race of banking and private equity.
Ryan, a family man, missed trips back to Michigan, birthdays, holidays and more. He would apologize often but I would assure him that it would all be fine. Our feeling was that this was temporary. Working these hours would open doors to future opportunities. Opportunities with more family friendly hours.
That opportunity was found in the city he loves most, Detroit. He has a job he is truly excited by and he feels like valued team member. What’s most important is that he is home with Jack and me for bath, book, bed time nearly every night and weekends are reserved for family.
Read the article. Ryan says it all so well.
With love from Detroit,
Callie
